On 21 February OIST launched a regular monthly series of colloquium style lectures on a wide range of topics of general scientific and social relevance with a talk by Professor K.R. Sreenivasan from New York University.

“The science studies we are now conducting with our students work hand in hand with the strong humanity courses so that our students also learn, in respect to the discipline, how to be human, decent, respectful and courageous.” - Professor Jonathan Jansen.

In the first of what we hope would become regular visits by all high school students on the island, OIST hosted a visit by 720 pupils from the Okinawa Prefectural Naha Kokusai Senior High School last December. On February 16, 310 juniors of the Okinawa Prefectural Kyuyo Senior High School visited the OIST campus for another day of exciting scientific exchange.

For some of the people displaced by Japan’s March 2011 triple disaster; the Earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant meltdown, their current living arrangements are constant reminders of the catastrophe.

Following our Inauguration as a Graduate University in November 2011, the OIST Graduate University was pleased to host the first Admissions Workshops from January 29th to 31st.

On January 23, Dr. Keshav Dani, Assistant Professor of the Femtosecond Spectroscopy Unit at OIST, visited Onna Junior High School to talk about science.
