Research Assistant in Experimental Mangrove Ecology
Details
- Starting Date: Preferably April 2025, but open until the position is filled
- End Date: To be discussed, typically a 6-12 month term
- Working hours: Flexible, no more than 5 days per week
- Report to: Dr. Matin Miryeganeh, Plant Molecular Ecology Lab
- Location: OIST Main Campus
Position Summary
Are you passionate about plant ecology and interested in gaining hands-on research experience? Join our mangrove ecology project at OIST, where we investigate how mangrove propagules adapt to environmental stressors. This opportunity offers two distinct pathways, depending on your interests and goals:
Option 1:
Contribute to an exciting, ongoing research project investigating how mangrove propagules adapt to environmental stressors. This role involves managing a controlled growth experiment, cultivating mangrove propagules in two growth chambers under distinct salinity conditions, and preparing leaf samples for downstream analyses. Your role will include monitoring plant health, adjusting salinity, and preparing samples for downstream molecular analyses. If interested, you will also have the opportunity to learn and practice the basics of molecular techniques. You will gain hands-on experience in experimental plant ecology and contribute to a project with the potential for co-authored publications, including opportunities for first authorship on smaller studies.
Option 2:
Bring your own research ideas or projects related to mangrove ecology or plant science. If you have a unique plan or proposal you'd like to explore, I would be delighted to discuss it with you and provide mentorship and resources to help bring your vision to life. This pathway is ideal for individuals seeking to develop their own research while benefiting from a collaborative and supportive environment.
Additionally, you may have the opportunity to accompany me on field sampling trips to local mangrove ecosystems in Okinawa, just a short drive from campus. This is a fantastic chance to develop your skills in experimental plant ecology, work in a dynamic international research environment, and contribute to impactful research in mangrove science.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the growth and maintenance of mangrove propagules in controlled conditions, including monitoring salinity levels and ensuring plant health.
