Matin is a molecular ecologist with a background in plant systematics and ecology. She earned her PhD as a MEXT scholar in Japan, where she studied the spatial population genetics of the beach-dwelling morning glory Ipomoea pes-caprae. After postdoctoral research at Kyoto University on plant senescence, she joined OIST as a JSPS fellow to explore the molecular underpinnings of stress tolerance in mangroves. Now leading her own lab as a JST-FOREST PI, Matin uses genomic, epigenomic, and transcriptomic approaches to investigate how mangrove trees retain "stress memory" and adapt to seasonal and environmental changes. Her research aims to understand how long-term resilience is encoded at the molecular level in response to transient or cyclical stressors. Outside the lab, Matin is an avid long-distance runner and can often be found on the roads, tracks, and trails around Onna.
