Exploring the Future of Innovation and Collaboration between OIST and JAIST

Joint Workshop Celebrates the First Anniversary of Partnership

OIST and JAIST joint workshop

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) and the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) celebrated the first anniversary of their academic partnership with a joint workshop on November 27, 2024, at the OIST campus. Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2023, the two institutions have been strengthening their research collaboration.

Under the theme “Collaborative Innovation for a Sustainable Future through Advanced Materials Science”, the workshop brought together researchers and doctoral students from both universities for engaging discussions. Speakers included Prof. Tadashi Yamamoto from OIST’s Cell Signaling Unit, Prof. Christine Luscombe from the pi-Conjugated Polymers Unit, Prof. Motoichi Kurisawa from JAIST’s eMEDX, and Prof. Toshiaki Taniike from the International Excellence Core for Materials Informatics of JAIST. They shared cutting-edge research updates on cancer treatment, sustainable materials synthesis, and automated catalyst design, highlighting the potential of their collaborative efforts.

The event also featured a poster session and flash talks co-hosted with Kanazawa University’s Nano Life Science Institute (NanoLSI). These sessions provided an opportunity for early-career researchers and doctoral students to present their work in English, leveraging OIST’s international environment. With approximately 80 participants, the workshop fostered vibrant exchanges during and after the sessions.

“This workshop showcased the immense potential for collaboration between OIST and JAIST,” a participant commented. “Discussions on cancer treatment, sustainable materials synthesis, and automated catalyst design demonstrated the synergy between our institutions. I’m excited to see how this partnership evolves to inspire groundbreaking innovations.”

The meeting deepened connections between researchers at OIST and JAIST, setting the stage for future joint projects and significant advancements in science and technology.
