Two OIST faculty members to receive JSPS Prize
We are pleased to announce that two OIST faculty members, Professor Keshav Dani and Professor Yabing Qi, will receive the 2023 JSPS Prize.
The JSPS Prize was established by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) to recognize and support young researchers with rich creativity and superlative research ability at an early stage in their careers and raise the level of scientific research in Japan to the world's highest standard.
Professor Keshav Dani
Professor Keshav Dani established the Femtosecond Spectroscopy Unit at OIST in 2011, and since then has made numerous achievements in the field of condensed matter physics and ultrafast optics. Recently, he has been selected for the Fusion Oriented Research for disruptive Science and Technology (FOREST) program for fiscal year 2022 and won the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough in Physical Sciences (2023).

Professor Dani's comment
“ I am deeply humbled to receive this recognition from JSPS for my work here at OIST. I have been in awe of Japan’s bold scientific vision in creating OIST, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the amazing science being done here. It is also wonderful to receive such a strong reaffirmation of OIST’s energy-related research – a major part of my work, and that of Prof. Qi – as OIST seeks to launch new energy-related initiatives here in Okinawa.”
Professor Yabing Qi
Professor Yabing Qi has led the Energy Materials and Surface Sciences Unit since 2011 and has been conducting research into materials for sustainable energy. His research has been highly recognized, including being elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2019, being selected as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate for three consecutive years starting in 2021, the Kao Science Award in 2022, and an MRS Fellow and AVS Fellow in 2023.

Professor Qi's comment
“It is my great honor to receive this prestigious prize from JSPS. First of all, I thank all the members in my research unit as well as our collaborators for their contributions. Also, I would like to thank the support from our university, OIST, especially for the strong recommendation from our Dean of Faculty Affairs, Prof. Evan Economo, and the help from Mami Takahashi from Faculty Affairs Office, my research unit administrator, Naoko Ogura-Gayler, and my family. Last but not the least, I want to thank the strong funding support from OIST (in particular the R&D cluster research program and proof of concept program) as well as public funding from Kakenhi and JST A-STEP research grants.
