It is with immense sadness that we share the news of the death of an OIST student.
An OIST student passed away Sunday, October 9, while engaging in recreational activities at Apogama Point in Onna Village. The individual was swimming with their parents who are visiting the island.
On behalf of the whole OIST community, we express our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time. We provide free counselling, referrals, and resources in Japanese and English for fellow students and everyone in the OIST community through our Ganjuu Wellbeing Service and Health Center.
In addition, OIST will work to prevent other water safety incidents from happening again in the future. At present, we have provided marine incident prevention seminars incooperation with Naha Coast Guard, and water safety training, as well as other related information to our community.
