Loss of Gene Cluster for Sunscreen Biosynthesis

The Marine Genomics Unit determined that the striped catfish lost the ability to make the vertebrate sunscreen compound gadusol (a) due to losing the EEVS and MT-Ox genes from its genome (b). These results replicate findings in the   Japanese puffer and West African Coalacanth, which also lack the ability to produce gadusol.
