Mr. Hidetsune Takamine, Okinawa’s Ants Expert, smiling in front of his collection stored in the OIST specimen storage Mr. Takamine has been collecting and studying ants of Okinawa. He has collected 116 species including 30 species endemic to Okinawa. In addition, he developed a unique method of creating and preserving the specimens by modifying the “double immersion method”. In 2009, Mr. Takamine published a book titled the “Okinawa no Ari-sou (Ant Fauna of Okinawa)”. His extensive collection serves as the oldest and most reliable reference specimen of Okinawa.
