Introduction of J-PEAKS program

The "Program for Forming Japan’s Peak Research Universities (J-PEAKS)" is aimed at improving the research capabilities of Japan as a whole and promote the creation of new value. The purpose of this program is to promote the formation of a group of research universities that will lead the development of Japan's overall research capabilities by supporting the development of an environment in which core regional universities and universities with strengths in specific fields of research can strengthen their research capabilities by accelerating international development of research activities and social implementation, while collaborating with other universities, under strategic management that focuses on their strengths and distinctive research capabilities.

J-PEAKS at OIST

OIST has entered a 5-year strategy 2024-2029, with a focus on outstanding research and world-class education, aligned with innovation and outreach that are transformative and impactful. These core missions unite under the One OIST strategy, supported by the development of OIST’s internal environment, resilience in operation, and a mindset for a sustainable future.

In alignment with the new One OIST strategy, our J-PEAKS program aims to maximize the potential of OIST’s capabilities by inter-linking the three driving forces of excellence, innovation, and local-to-global contribution as we undertake a 5-year strategy guided by seven mission areas and an outlook for the next ten years.

In overcoming the various challenges facing a young and unique university like OIST, we are focusing on maturing as a peer research university that engages with the world's top universities. Throughout this process, we act as a gateway to Japan and a bridge between Japan and the world. We aim to be an active contributor to mobility and collaboration in a group of research universities that drives the strengthening of Japan's research capabilities.

Flagship programs

Here are some of the key programs designed to promote the enhancement of research capabilities of the university.

Open Center

The Open Centers at OIST are dynamic hubs that enhance the university’s visibility in targeted research clusters and foster multi- and interdisciplinary research through a shared scientific vision. These centers are central in promoting open science and enhancing collaboration, visibility, and exchanges with researchers from other universities and industry partners. They also harness opportunities for large external funding and donations, supporting the recruitment of talent at all levels to advance OIST's strategic objectives.

Core Facilities

OIST is establishing world-class core facilities and promoting joint use with domestic and international researchers. By providing advanced research equipment and technical support, and by developing a global research-support-staff training system, OIST is enhancing its research environment and research quality.

Buribushi Fellowship

As part of the career development system that allows young researchers to actively engage in research activities as next-generation leaders, OIST has established new positions that allow them to independently lead research projects. The positions are filled through open calls.

Collaboration with strategic partners

OIST is strengthening collaboration with domestic and international universities and research institutions to promote and expand interdisciplinary joint research and societal implementation.
