Postdoctoral Scholars in Collective Dynamics and Quantum Transport Unit

The position

The research unit “Collective Dynamics and Quantum Transport” invites applications for postdoctoral scholar positions in the field of theoretical condensed matter and the interdisciplinary field with quantum optics and quantum information. We are interested in dynamical and transport phenomena in various quantum systems in and out of equilibrium, in particular those relevant to new experimental platforms and techniques, such as quantum and topological materials, cavity and cold-atom systems, hybrid quantum systems, pump probe, nonlinear optics, and noise spectroscopy. Research topics include but are not limited to quantum magnetism, quantum spintronics, quantum transport, quantum sensing, nonequilibrium quantum dynamics, open quantum systems, light-matter interactions, and non-Hermitian physics. Candidates interested in network dynamics and interdisciplinary field between condensed matter and neural science are also welcome to apply.

OIST has several groups in condensed matter physics and quantum information, providing a stimulating research environment. There will be opportunities to supervise Ph.D. students and/or Undergraduate/Master interns, collaborate with other OIST units and international theoretical/experimental research groups, travel for conferences and workshops, and organize local workshops and activities. More experienced researchers can be considered for the appointment as staff scientists, and are encouraged to conduct independent and collaborative work.

Interested candidates are welcome to send their CVs to Dr. Shu Zhang via email below and discuss potential research projects.

Applicants who are also interested in opportunities in the Theory of Quantum Matter [Nic Shannon] are encouraged to apply for both positions.

About OIST

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University was established in 2011 to contribute to the development of science and technology worldwide and to serve as a hub of innovation in Okinawa. OIST is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan which offers a 5-year PhD program and brings together outstanding researchers from across the country and across disciplines to conduct cutting-edge scientific research.

The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking a beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding. To facilitate multidisciplinary research, there are no academic departments. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration.

English is the official language of the University, and the university research community is fully international, with more than 50 countries represented. OIST is rapidly gaining recognition in the worldwide academic community as a model for excellence in education and research, and our unwavering commitment to scientific and technological innovation is dedicated to generating progress that will fuel Okinawa's economic growth.

Responsibilities

1.    Conducting original and active research work that aligns with the core interest of the group described above. Establishment of independent research interest and collaboration within and outside of the group is encouraged.
2.    Contributing to the dynamic, communicative, and inclusive research environment in the group and OIST.

Qualifications

(Required) We are looking for highly-motivated candidates with a Ph.D. in theoretical condensed matter physics or related fields, and working-level proficiency in verbal and written English.

(Preferred) Candidates with strong analytical (for example, kinetic and transport theories, Keldysh formalism, nonequilibrium quantum field theory, quantum optics theory etc.) and/or numerical (molecular dynamics simulations, quantum many-body methods, time-dependent and stochastic methods, machine learning) skills are preferred.
