Members of the Light-Matter Interactions Unit use optical nanofibers and lasers to trap plastic balls the size of human red blood cells on an ‘optical conveyor belt’. The group hopes to work with biologists at OIST to replace the plastic balls with real cells with the goal of developing better ways to sort mixtures of cells found in biological samples.  

"Science Without Boundaries" gives you a short introduction to OIST. There are two editions of the movie - the full-length edition at 7.5 minutes and the short edition at 2 minutes. Each is available in two versions: Japanese subtitles and English subtitles. Feel free to download one or all the versions and distribute them as widely as you can. Purkinje cells are large neurons in the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for motor coordination. This 3D reconstruction shows Purkinje cells in a living mouse that were labeled with a genetically-encoded indicator to make them detectable. Here we see a side view of Purkinje cells just beneath the surface of the brain. The pear-shaped structures are the cell bodies, which connect to fan-like dendritic trees going upward and long, thin axons reaching downward. When the image rotates to show the top and bottom views, the distinctive flat structure of the dendritic tree is clear. This alignment is thought to optimize communication with the granule cells beneath them. A time lapse video of the setup of a new ultra high vacuum nanoparticle deposition system, which will enable researchers under the supervision of Prof. Mukhles Sowwan to make their own custom nanoparticles for a variety of applications. The setup, by Mantis Deposition Ltd., takes place in the new lab space of the Nanoparticles by Design Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology.

An animation showing a new nanoparticle deposition system in OIST's Nanoparticles by Design for Nanotechnology and Biomedical Applications Unit. Atoms of up to three different materials can be sputtered from the source simultaneously to form nanoclusters in the gas aggregation zone. The newly-formed nanoclusters then pass through a mass filter that selects those in a certain size range. Finally, the nanoclusters can either be deposited on a solid surface or harvested for applications such as novel cancer therapies, drug delivery systems, infrared detectors, and sensors.
