On Saturday, June 16, Prof. David Daley of the University of Nottingham delivered a public lecture at OIST on parenting children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Prof. Daley is an expert on environmental factors and early intervention for ADHD. Audience members completely filled the 500-seat auditorium for the event, and Prof. Daley thanked them for coming to the lecture on a Saturday morning despite the day’s excellent weather.

His talk was centered on three topics: the underlying psychological causes of ADHD children’s symptoms; the impacts of those symptoms on their family and social relationships, school performance, and quality of life; and behavioral interventions parents and teachers can use to help affected children and reduce their symptoms. During the Q&A session at the end of the talk, audience members identifying themselves as teachers, nursery workers, mothers, and a grandfather of children with ADHD queried the speaker about specific issues they faced. Members of the Human Developmental Neurobiology Unit, which organized the event along with the Communications Division, hope it will be a step toward increasing awareness of ADHD and access to resources for affected families on Okinawa.

This was the first of a planned series of public lectures at OIST; future events will be announced on the OIST website.

Slides from the lecture are available here.
