Stream of Visitors
Over the last weeks, there has been a steady stream of visitors to the OIST campus. The Ambassadors to Japan from Norway, Mr. Arne Roy Walther; Finland, Mr. Jari Gustafsson; Denmark, Mr. A. Carsten Damsgaard and Sweden, Dr. Lars Vargö visited OIST on February 17. The diplomats had discussions with OIST President Jonathan Dorfan and Provost Robert Baughman and an introduction to research at the university by several of the faculty.
On February 29, 76 business leaders from Japan visited the university as part of their visit to the Okinawa for the Daikin Orchid Ladies Golf Tournament. Mr. Yoshifumi Nishikawa, Honorary Consultant of Sumitomo Mistsui Banking Co., said, “I am impressed by OIST’s ability to conduct top-notch research with such few people. I expect OIST to become one of the key players in the advancement of not only Japan’s, but also the world’s science and technology.”
Two days later 310 students from the Okinawa Prefectural Kyuyo Senior High School spent the afternoon at OIST as part of the university program to have all high school students on the island visit the OIST campus. 1683 high school students have now toured OIST since November 2011.
OIST was delighted by the visit by Prof. Akira Suzuki, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 2010 and Professor Emeritus of Hokkaido University on March 7. He had discussions with OIST President Jonathan Dorfan and then toured the campus.
