Mathematical Sciences
Energy and Sustainability

Experience a new model of scientific freedom in an innovative university.

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology is an English-speaking and dynamic doctoral program-only university in Japan. We are inviting applications for tenure-track and tenured faculty positions.

We provide:

  • Sustained research funding for your scientific vision
  • Fully funded PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, lab techs, and staff scientists
  • World-class core facilities and expert support staff
  • Support for amplifying your scientific impact (e.g., technology transfer, outreach, collaborations)
  • Full administrative support

Our culture and environment:

  • No faculty hierarchies or departments
  • A thriving international research community representing 80+ countries
  • A vibrant, safe, multicultural setting on the beautiful island of Okinawa

Applications are sought in two areas:

  • Mathematical Sciences, including pure math, applied math, statistics, and data sciences. Any potential connections to the broad areas represented at OIST are welcome.
  • Energy and Sustainability, broadly defined. Interdisciplinary approaches complementing OIST’s current research portfolio, as well as impactful energy solutions for sub-tropical islands are particularly welcome.

As a core part of our expansion plan and research vision, we seek to hire three tenure-track or tenured faculty members in each area.

To fully realize our vision of promoting scientific excellence through a diverse and inclusive community, OIST is actively seeking applications from women and underrepresented groups to meet our target of hiring at least 50% women in this current search. Successful applicants will enjoy competitive remuneration packages with additional benefits, such as housing and commuting allowances, dual-career support, and family support.
