Visits by Junior High Schools to OIST

Every year, thousands of junior high school students have visited the OIST campus to see firsthand that science is more than tests and textbooks, that it is a worldwide effort to better understand nature and solve problems with that new knowledge. The approximately 60minute includes an introduction to OIST, a campus tour, and a science experience program.

The program includes:

Campus tour

Duration: 60 minutes (It may vary depending on the number of participants)

Maximum number of participants in one visit: 80

Date: Weekdays 10am or 2pm

In addition to receiving tours and visits from schools, OIST sends researchers to junior high schools to introduce their research and career. Please email Community Relations for details and requests.

OOCSS Onna/OIST Junior Science Program

The Children's School of Science, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019, is a joint effort by Onna Village and OIST to give local school-age children in Onna Village experience doing science under the guidance of professional researchers from around the world.

The three-day Junior Science Program is held every year to coincide with the Onna Village junior high school summer vacation. Participants are limited to Onna Village residents and the families of OIST employees and students. However, the faculty, parents, and staff of OIST, as well as college students in Okinawa can participate as staff in this project with the Onna community.

Unna Junior High School Science Club

One of the missions of OIST is to be a bridge between the local Okinawa community and the world of international science. The Unna Junior High School Science Club was established as a joint effort by OIST and Unna Junior High School in October 2021 to support STEM education for junior and senior high school students in Okinawa and promote an interdisciplinary approach to community education.
