Signal Transmission at the Synapse

At the synapse, an electrical signal arrives at the pre-synaptic terminal and triggers vesicles to release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. The neurotransmitters activate receptors in the post-synaptic neuron and produce electrical signals.
