Virtual shark age estimation

Utilizing 3D imaging as an alternative to traditional mechanical sectioning, Dr. Ziadi-Künzli examines vertebrae centra to count dense rings – similar to tree rings – that form annually during colder periods. This provides a precise measure of shark age. The images display virtual scans of sharks at different ages, with red dots highlighting the dense winter band formations.
