Faculty of Engineering at the University of the Ryukyus visit OIST
OIST has deepened its relationship with the University of the Ryukyus through various occasions. Thirty-six members of the Department of Engineering at the University of the Ryukyus, including faculty members, visited OIST on June 23 to take a tour of the campus facilities and to exchange academic information to strengthen relationship between the Department of Engineering at the University of the Ryukyus and OIST.
Dr. Doya demonstrates Cyber Rodents
During the tour, faculty of University of the Ryukyus visited the Neural Computation Unit led by Dr. Kenji Doya, and received an explanation of intelligent small robots called “Cyber Rodents” developed by the unit. The visitors were very interested to hear how the research unit is trying to figure out systems in the brain by developing Cyber Rodents.
Dr. Tomio Takara
After the tour, Dr. Jonathan Dorfan, OIST President-elect, presented an overview of current status and goals at OIST. In reply, Dr. Tomio Takara, dean of the Department of Engineering, stated “I think we can make a good relationship with OIST due to the fact that the Department of Engineering carries out research in similar fields.”
The Faculty of the University of the Ryukyus and OIST researchers make acquaintance
Dr. Jonathan Miller of the Physics and Biology Unit, Dr. Ulf Skoglund of the Structural Cellular Biology Unit, Dr. Erik De Schutter of the Computational Neuroscience Unit and Dr. Alf Wachsmann, Manager of High Performance Computing, gave presentations on their work at OIST. After the seminar, the faculty members from the University of the Rukyus and OIST researchers had a chance to chat individually about their research projects and possibilities of collaborations for the future.
