Network Engineer
The Scientific Computing and Data Analysis (SCDA) section, under the Core Facilities (CF), promotes the effective use of High-Performance Computing and centrally managed resources in OIST research environment. The SCDA manages OIST scientific computing resources and services, including data storage and campus network to support computationally intensive research studies, ranging from bioinformatics to computational physics.
This network engineer position supports research activities through a network infrastructure that incorporates the latest technologies. This position will also be involved in planning, designing, and deploying the entire campus network, which is still expanding. Under the direction of the SCDA Leader, the member will support usage of OIST network resources, which involves day to day management network infrastructure and services, as well as general systems administration and documentation and performing routine network modification tasks based on various requests from users.
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University was established in 2011 to contribute to the development of science and technology worldwide and to serve as a hub of innovation in Okinawa. - Support day-to-day operations of the campus network, perform configuration change and device monitoring, troubleshoot and analyze complex issues, respond to requests from users and other stakeholders, and perform security administration
- Contribute to the design, procurement, physical installation, configuration, documentation, asset management, maintenance and support of network and communications, including LAN, wireless, WAN, and research computing related network
- Collaborate and coordinate with vendors and partners, from Japan and abroad, in support, maintenance, proof-of-concept, and collaboration activities as required
- Explores emerging technologies and technical developments to address expanding analytical requirements
- Contribute to a team culture of trust and transparency by sharing information openly, and deliberately
- Perform other related duties as assigned or requested by the Section Leader
(Required)
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as computer science, computer information systems, etc., or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- 3+ years of deployment, operation and administration of multi-vendor network infrastructure
- Certification from at least two network switch vendors, or higher qualification or field experience
- Experience working in data center and server room environments, including cabling, racking and troubleshooting
- Experience in network design, migration, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation, and end-user support
- Experience in daily working in Linux environment (installation, configuration, etc.) and using shell scripting languages like bash
- Good organization and communication skills, verbal and written, either in Japanese or in English
- Ability to develop positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members
- Ability to identify and resolve problems
- Ability to learn and apply new concepts, methods and practices
(Preferred)
- Broad expertise in network protocols and related software: SNMP, DHCP, DNS, NTP, RADIUS, VXLAN, EVPN, L2VPN, OSPF, LLDP, M-LAG, VPN, SSH, STP, LACP, ACLs, VRF, etc.
- Knowledge of storage and storage filesystems
- Experience in network security and security strategy
- Experience with automation tools (e.g. Ansible) and monitoring tools and version control tools (e.g. Git)
Expected Annual Salary: 5,000,000 - 8,000,000 yen
*This amount represents the expected annual salary range for this position, which will be determined based on your experience and skills in accordance with the OIST Employee Compensation Regulations.

Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 6-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed by taking into consideration the performance evaluation, conduct, and behavior of the Employee and OIST’s financial and other circumstances.
