Community Relations Staff

The position

The community relation section aims to become a research university open to the local community and contribute to the development of Okinawa by organizing and implementing science events and educational programs as part of capacity building. Additionally, we offer guided campus tours for the general public, host school visits, and accommodate special visits by external organizations. Furthermore, we play a role in strengthening collaboration both within and outside the institution to advance our initiatives. The Community Relations Section website is HERE.

About OIST

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University was established in 2011 to contribute to the development of science and technology worldwide and to serve as a hub of innovation in Okinawa. OIST is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan which offers a 5-year PhD program and brings together outstanding researchers from across the country and across disciplines to conduct cutting-edge scientific research.

The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking a beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding. To facilitate multidisciplinary research, there are no academic departments. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration.

Responsibilities
  1.     Plan and organize science educational programs such as lectures, events, workshops, internships and others for capacity building purposes.
  2.     Organize visiting programs by students and the public.
  3.     Plan and organize cultural events such as performing arts and exhibitions, etc.
  4.     Strengthening collaboration with municipalities and external organizations.
  5.     Strengthening collaboration within the institution.
  6.     Receive phone calls and correspond to inquiries from the outside.
  7.     Manage purchase orders and travel request with an accounting system.
  8.     Update section website.
  9.     Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications

(Required)

  1.     A bachelor’s degree in education, communications, public relations, social sciences, or community development, or relevant fields.
  2.     2-5 years of experience in relevant fields.
  3.     Business level English (TOEIC 800 or higher) and native level Japanese
  4.     Strong communication verbal skills when dealing stakeholders
  5.     Computer proficiency (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc)
  6.     Ability to perform tasks as a team player

(Preferred)

  1.     Experience in science communication
  2.     Knowledge of basic science, experience in science education
  3.     Work experience in an international environment
  4.     Work experience related to customer service
Compensation and Benefits

Expected Annual Salary: 3,500,000 - 6,500,000 yen
*This amount represents the expected annual salary range for this position, which will be determined based on your experience and skills in accordance with the OIST Employee Compensation Regulations.

Employment Term

Full-time, fixed term appointment for 1~2 years. Contract initially with 6-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed by taking into consideration the performance evaluation, conduct, and behavior of the Employee and OIST’s financial and other circumstances.

Working Hours

Scheduled Working hours: 9:00 – 17:30
Rest period: 12:00 – 13:00
Flextime (core time 10:00-15:00) 7.5hrs per day (Multiplied by prescribed working days per month)

Holidays:
Saturday, Sunday, National holidays, and Year-end and New Year holidays (Dec. 29 – Jan. 3)

Leave:
Annual Paid Holidays, Summer Leave, Sick Leave, and Special Leave
