From August 1st to August 5th, the OIST and Onna Village Children’s School of Science took place at the Fureai Taiken Center in Onna. This year a total of 55 elementary school students, mostly from Onna village elementary school, participated in the summer school.

 

A coral genome has been decoded for the first time by the Marine Genomics Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST).

Dr. Takayuki Yamashita, formerly a group leader in the OIST Cellular and Molecular Synaptic Function Unit led by Dr. Tomoyuki Takahashi, will receive the 2011 Japan Neuroscience Society Young Investigator Award.

OIST has received a Good Lighting Award 2010 from the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan (IEIJ) for the excellent illumination facilities in Laboratory 1.

Scientists at OIST are working to illuminate the minute details of how brain cells called neurons communicate.

Five researchers from the Marine Genomics Unit, led by Dr. Noriyuki Satoh, and nineteen mollusk researchers from seven universities and research institutions across Japan, gathered at the OIST campus for the "Japanese Pearl Oyster Genome Jamboree."

Young scientists from sixteen countries have gathered at OIST to participate in the Summer School and Workshop “Quantitative Evolutionary and Comparative Genomics (QECG).”

For the next month, JAXA and NICT will use parts of the OIST Onna campus in experiments which may lead to advances in weather forecasting and flood prediction.

A paper by Dr. Hiroaki Kitano, Principal Investigator of the Open Biology Unit, was published in Nature Chemical Biology. The paper discusses a new type of big science emerging that involves knowledge integration and collaboration among small sciences.
