20 Essay Contest Winners Announced
OIST is happy to announce the results of the 2011 Essay Contest.
In December of 2010, OIST issued a challenge to science students living in Japan: write an essay in English about the effectiveness of "a multidisciplinary approach to solving complicated problems in science and technology today". Forty-six undergraduate and graduate students submitted essays of around 500 words, and out of these thought-provoking submissions, researchers and principal investigators at OIST chose twenty winners.
The prize is an invitation to the “Sun, Sea, and Science Student Workshop,” where they will spend March 14th to 18th in Okinawa working with, learning from, and getting to know some of the world's most promising researchers. Students will learn by example and through direct instruction what kind of skills and qualities are needed to become a world-class scientist.
The OIST academic staff is collaborating with principal investigators and their teams to create a truly transformative experience for participants, giving them the opportunity to collaborate on difficult problems under the guidance of some of today's most influential thinkers. Surrounded by the natural beauty of Onna-son, participants will have the rare opportunity to experience the challenges and excitement of working as professional researchers in a truly international, interdisciplinary scientific environment.
The administration and research staff of OIST looks forward to hosting these promising young minds and making this a memorable event for all of those involved.
