OIST New Research Laboratory Opening
The construction of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology is progressing steadily towards its opening in FY2012. In March 2010, the use of Laboratory 1 and the Center Building commenced.
To mark the opening of the new research laboratory, OIST P.C., which is preparing for the university's opening, held a commemorative event attended by approximately 300 guests, including officials from the central government, Okinawa Prefecture, and local municipal governments.
Speaking on behalf of OIST President Dr. Sydney Brenner, Executive Director Dr. Robert Baughman delivered a speech expressing gratitude for the help and support by all people concerned. Dr. Torsten Wiesel, Co-Chair of the OIST Board of Governors, thanked the people of Okinawa for welcoming the OIST community and wished that education of outstanding students by the world's top scientists will stimulate the local youth. Okinawa Governor Mr. Hirokazu Nakaima spoke of the strong continued support from the local community for the graduate university, while Onna Mayor Mr. Fumiyasu Shikiya expressed his hope that OIST will bring changes to the nation's science and technology.
