Science + Art Exhibit: "Coral Colors by Sputniko!"

Science + Art Exhibit: "Coral Colors by Sputniko!"
Friday November 29th, 2024 to Thursday January 9th, 2025 (All day)
OIST Tunnel Gallery

Description

Coral reefs, renowned for their breathtaking beauty, play a vital role as habitats for a diverse array of marine life. However, in recent years, these ecosystems are increasingly threatened by coral bleaching, a phenomenon exacerbated by global warming. This exhibition aims to visually interrogate the majestic beauty of coral reefs and the environmental challenges they face.

By viewing "Coral Colors," spectators are invited to confront the ongoing reality of coral bleaching and to spark an awareness of environmental issues.

The artworks on display in this exhibition were created by British/Japanese artist Sputniko!, widely known for her creations and projects exploring the themes of technology, gender, and feminism.

Please join us in welcoming Sputniko! as OIST’s first Visiting Artist!

As part of this pilot project, Sputniko! will give a public talk, Digital Canvas: The Nexus of Science Art and Technology at the OIST Auditorium on December 7, followed by the launch of OIST’s first on-chain generative artwork, also known as NFT art.

Register for public talk here (registration opens at 10:00 on Nov. 12).

You can read FAQ about on-chain generative art here.

This project was supported by Prof. Tim Ravasi (OIST’s Marine Climate Change Unit).
