Coral reef fish husbandry technician position at the Marine Climate Change Unit

The position

Position summary:

We seek for a highly motivated fish husbandry technician to join the Marine Climate Change Unit at OIST (https://groups.oist.jp/macc) to work on a long-term projects that aims to understand the effects of climate stressors (i.e. ocean acidification and warming) on coral reef fishes. The successful candidate will responsible for  running a state-of-the-art coral reef fish breeding aquaria system at the OIST Marine Science Station (https://groups.oist.jp/omsss/okinawa-marine-science-station), this include day-to-day fish and aquaria care such as feeding, cleaning, and monitoring aquaria water parameters.

Responsibilities

Animal Care and Maintenance:

  • Perform daily feeding and care of marine organisms
  • Monitor and maintain water quality parameters

Facility Maintenance:

  • Conduct regular cleaning and maintenance of aquaria, filtration systems, and associated equipment.
  • Perform routine checks and minor repairs on equipment to ensure optimal operation and report any issues to the appropriate personnel.

Health Monitoring and Record Keeping:

  • Monitor the health and behavior of fish and other marine organisms, promptly identifying and addressing any signs of illness or stress.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal health, feeding schedules, and environmental conditions.

Support for Research Activities:

  • Assist researchers in setting up and conducting experiments, including preparation of experimental tanks and handling of marine specimens.
  • Collect and process biological samples as required for various research projects.
Qualifications

(Required)

1. Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Biology, Aquaculture, Ecology, or other related fields.

2. Experience in fish care and management, including monitoring water quality, treating fish diseases, and maintaining aquaculture, marine, or similar systems.

(Preferred)

1. SCUBA diving certified.

2. Experience with research involving live animals

3. Fluency in Japanese

In the discretionary labor system for specialized work, the employee shall be deemed to have worked 7 hours 30 minutes per day.
