Technician for the OIST Center for Quantum Technologies

The position

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding (OIST campus video tour). There are no academic departments, which facilitates multidisciplinary research. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration. Position summary:

The OIST Center for Quantum Technologies (OCQT: https://www.oist.jp/ocqt) is seeking to hire a technician to support experimental activities for the SIP project within the Center. The position is for a start in 2024 and an initial duration of 2 years with possible extension until the end of March 2028. The successful candidate should have experience in at least some of the following (in order of importance): electronics, equipment interfacing (LabVIEW, Python), ultrahigh vacuum, computer hardware and maintenance, optics, clean room fabrication and materials processing.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to work with a diverse team of scientists at the OCQT. There are several experimental research units (see https://www.oist.jp/ocqt/members) within the Center. Upon a request from the researchers in these units, the candidate should be able to give them support, consultation and solutions on various technical terms (e.g. electronics, computer programming, vacuum etc.) and help them achieve goals in the relevant research projects.

Qualifications

(Required)

  1. MEng or MSc in engineering or physics.
  2. Working knowledge of written and spoken English.
  3. Hands-on skills in some of the following categories (in order of importance): Electronics, equipment interfacing (LabVIEW, Python), ultrahigh vacuum, computer hardware and maintenance, optics, clean room fabrication and materials processing
  4. Capable of using Microsoft Office suite.
