Figure 2: 3D reconstruction of a typical mudskipper pectoral fin (Periophthalmus argentilineatus) showing calcified elements such as shoulder girdle, radials and fin rays (from left to right). The unique anatomical features in the skeletton of the mudskipper pectoral fin comprise of two movable hing joints (pink stars), an elongation of the proximal radials and an enlarged cleithrum to provide larger surface area for muscle attachment (i.e. increased force generation).
