RC-FAQ: Cars and Shaken/JCI

From October 1st-31st, 2013, an exhibit featuring ink-painted byobu, or folding screens, by Kunigami Village artist Ichiro Kikuta takes place at the OIST campus. Kikuta makes his byobu with traditional methods, featuring plants and animals that he runs into on a daily basis in the Yambaru forest of North Okinawa. This video will take you on a virtual tour to the Yambaru forest and behind the scenes of byobu making. Listen to Kikuta as he speaks about his feelings toward ink painting. 

Grammatikopoulos created this simulation of palladium nanoparticles colliding at 1000 Kevin, or about 727 degrees Celsius. At this hot temperature, the nanoparticles meet, fuse, and crystallize, forming one large homogenous product.

Full moon nights in summer are very special for corals. At 10 p.m., when water is around 24°C (75°F), Acropora digitifera corals in the southernmost part of Japan start to release their eggs and sperm, known as gametes, exactly at the same time in a process called synchronized spawning. Since corals cannot move to find a partner, they let their reproductive cells free float in the ocean, hoping for an encounter. Understanding how the resulting newborn coral larvae migrate and settle is crucial to protect our beautiful coral reef.
