Typhoon Muifa
The powerful Typhoon, Muifa, brought very heavy rainfall and strong winds to Okinawa over a period of more than 40 hours. On Saturday, August 6, 609 mm of rain fell in 24 hours, the heaviest rainfall on Okinawa since data became available in 1981.
During the bad weather, although there were rain leaks at some places and fallen trees were reported, OIST’s facilities, including, the Seaside House, our research laboratories in Uruma City, and Lab-2 construction area, suffered only superficial damage.
OIST's Internet connection went down for a period during the Typhoon.
The cause and future countermeasures are currently under investigation.
The companies responsible for construction of Lab-2, the Auditorium and for facility maintenance, made a big effort to minimize damages to the facilities by the typhoon.
