Dr. Johannes Schönke and Prof. Eliot Fried have introduced a new class of kaleidocycles, which have seven or more hinges. One of the researchers’ main challenges was learning what conditions had to be met for a chain of seven or more pyramids (left) to be closed into a ring (right).

Dr. Johannes Schönke and Prof. Eliot Fried created a variety of Möbius Kaleidocycles with different numbers of hinges from folded paper and 3D printed materials.

Chaetognaths, or arrow worms, have a distinct jaw structure composed of dense protein matrix and a fibrous substance called chitin. These organisms display an ambiguous set of developmental and morphological features, making them difficult to categorize on the Tree of Life.

To the naked eye, the nematode C. elgeans appears to move forward, backward and turn. With a new method of modeling dynamical systems, researchers from the Biological Physics Theory Unit and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam have revealed subtle nuances in each of these behavioral states.
