Richter et al. analyzed the anatomy of the head of Protanila lini, an extremely rare species found in Okinawa (top and bottom right). This species is part of a clade that represents the sister group of all other ants. We analyzed the functional morphology of the unusual mandibular structure with 3D modeling and 3D printing.
