Micro/Bio/Nanofluidics Unit Research Featured on the Cover of Advanced Biosystems

An image created by PhD student Shivani Sathish from the Micro/Bio/Nanofluidics Unit at OIST has been featured on the cover of the journal Advanced Biosystems, published in print on April 10th.

The image is part of a paper published in this journal by Nikhil Bhalla, Shivani Sathish, Abhishek Sinha and Amy Q. Shen from the unit, entitled,"Large‐Scale Nanophotonic Structures for Long‐Term Monitoring of Cell Proliferation".

The image shows a biocompatible gold nanomushroom substrate on which fibroblast cells proliferate. The substrate enables nanoplasmonic detection of cell kinetics and enhances long‐term cell survival. These results open new opportunities in developing standard cell assays without chemical labels to detect cellular responses at nanoscale.
