A scientist at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology wanted to find a way to study hundreds of generations of animals, but didn't want to spend his life doing it, so Dr. Stefan Elfwing turned to robot sex.

The wheeled machines only had so much energy, so they had to make sure to reproduce and not spend it all trying to find batteries. By studying how the bots did this, Elfwing was able to see how mating habits develop, and also demonstrated how robots can be used to study living creatures.
