TSVP Symposium: Frontiers in Nonlinear Differential Equations and Stokes Phenomena
Description
TSVP Symposium: Frontiers in Nonlinear Differential Equations and Stokes Phenomena
linked to TSVP Thematic Program:
Exact Asymptotics: From Fluid Dynamics to Quantum Geometry
>> The presentation slides of many talks can be found in the download section at the bottom of this page.
Abstract
Asymptotic methods and perturbation theory are fundamental tools, and widely used in practically every field of the physical and theoretical sciences, from fluid mechanics and medical imaging, to condensed matter physics and string theory. Despite their ubiquity, however, advances in asymptotic analysis, particular beyond-all-orders asymptotics, has been led by fragmented communities in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and theoretical physics. The intention of this symposium is to bring together a number of such distinct communities and to encourage interaction and knowledge exchange.
The symposium will have a novel format designed to encourage communication amongst specialists in disparate areas. The first week will begin with a number of panorama talks (accompanying other public lectures) on rigorous asymptotics, applications to physical sciences, and asymptotics in geometry and physics. During the symposium, speakers will be encouraged to link their research-level talk with separate introductory talks, designed to communicate the key ideas and language in an accessible way. Discussions and final-day debriefs will also encourage knowledge sharing between disparate fields.

Guide to symposium talk types
Public talk (50 min, 10 min questions) | Accessible to both non-specialists and the wider public; these talks will be made available on YouTube; very wide ranging audience from non-mathematicians and non-scientists to specialists
Panorama talk (50 min, 10 min questions) | Colloquium-style introduction to important questions in the area, overview of research etc. Accessible to an audience that may span several disciplines in pure and applied mathematics and theoretical physics.
Lectures (50 min, 10 min questions) | Graduate-level summer school. Pedagogical to enable the various research areas to be able to interact.
Research talks (25 min intro, 5 min break, 25 min research, 5 min questions) | We will ask everyone to prepare their talks with 25 minutes of pedagogical background and 25 minutes of research talk. This split may be enforced by having a break in between the two halves!
